Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
Incumbent will be responsible for the lead designer functions specific to the CVN 78 HVAC construction drawings. Duties will include oversight, progressing, configuration management, drawing development and process development for HVAC drawings. Successful candidate will have a solid background in HVAC system design and will be a team partner with existing HVAC drawing development team.
Typical Minimum Education / Experience:
This job requires a Bachelor's degree in Design, Engineering, or a related discipline, plus a minimum of 6 years of progressively complex experience or an Associates Degree in a related discipline and 8 years of progressively complex experience or the equivalent in specialized education, training and experience. Experience should involve a broad knowledge of naval ship systems, as well as advanced design concepts and applications. Certified CAD competency in NGNN CAD equipment/tools, including CATIA, GSCAD, VIVID or its successor, is preferable. Also requires thorough knowledge of accepted design methods and concepts, and must be familiar with engineering, design or other principles relating to a specific area of work. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential. May require the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc. May require the ability to obtain and retain specific security clearances as well as full or partial radiation worker qualifications.
